This week we again appeal to the hopheads amongst you with a strong IPA. Art Brew Monkey IPA is what I would term a “real” IPA with its heavy grapefruit hops and high ABV (6.4%). The bitter flavours of this beer are really quite appealing
The initial taste is a strong bitter grapefruit and citrus, this quickly gets backed up by a thick caramel malty middle loaded with hoppy orange citrus zest, there is a fiery ginger taste then the bitterness takes over for the end which is a bitter grapefruit and a slight spiciness.
Art Brew Monkey IPA is a hard hitting beer, the hops are brutal and no-nonsense with strong grapefruit flavours and a bitter astringency. Therefore this beer will not be for all, however if you like your beers strongly hopped then this will be a treat. The ginger in the middle is interesting and gives this beer a unique character, if more ginger ales could have this flavour then they would appeal much more to beer drinkers.
The brewery Art Brew also makes another similar IPA – Spanked Monkey IPA, this contains ginger and chilli to give an even more pronounced flavour. I have had this before I wouldn’t say I like it, but I am not partial to chilli beer, but if you find that you like the flavour of this beer and either like beers with added chilli or have not tried one then I would recommend seeking out the Spanked Monkey IPA.
Art Brew Monkey IPA has an added appeal in it’s label, you can see that the brewery does not take itself too seriously when you read the warning label on the side, anyone who gets frustrated with alcohol labelling will find this one amusing.
Drink responsibly – this beer is strong. Don’t start fights or arguments or even think about driving or operating machinery whilst under it’s influence. This bottle probably contains more unit that your daily allowance but those figures are made up. You are an adult.
Obviously at 6.4%ABV Art Brewery Monkey IPA is a beer which needs to be enjoyed carefully – it is not really a session beer. It is however quite a nice beer to have slightly chilled as a refreshing end of day beer or as a strong hoppy beer amongst other similar hoppy beers.
Art Brew make their beers in Dorset and are only a 5 barrel micro brewery but you can buy their beers from on-line shops fairly easily. Check out their website here.
